DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND HISTORY:

Closely knotted in excellent wool and with rich glowing vegetable colour, this is a most elegant specimen of the tree-of-life design unique to the weavers of the Bakhtiari tribe. The midnight blue field contain the tree motif beloved by the Bakhtiari, decorated with fruits like pears, grapes, pomegranates and roses in colours like red, yellow ochre, coral rose, indigo and cobalt blue. At the base of the field, we can see four cypruses and the top of the field is decorated by two gold mihrabs. The ground colours of the panels are most imaginatively arranged to produce a very pleasing effect. The ivory ground main border has a series of stylised rosettes in walnut brown alternating with contrasted rosettes in peach and terracotta all distributed upon a striking foliate meander in rose and dark blue. Two roseate side borders with pink stem-lattice patterns complete this outstanding example of classic Bakhtiari knotting art.
